-
- Dave, you spoke of four problems:
-
- >1. AppleLink has a hard time handling a group address with hundreds of names.
- >2. MacApp.News$ is also too big.
- >3. People on MacApp.Tech$ get too much mail, causing many people to drop off.
- >4. There are often multiple postings...
-
- They all point to a greater problem when A'link is used for group discussions:
-
- A'link is a mail system, and doesn't support the threaded discussion mechanisms
- that make lurking on BBS's so much more convenient than being on MacApp.Tech$.
- I stay on both group address's, waste hours sorting, filing and browsing mail,
- because the caliber of the conversation is high, and MacApp.Tech$ provides
- information available nowhere else.
-
- It stinks as a BBS, and most of the 300+ MacApp.Tech$ subscribers are trying to
- use it like one. Curtis Faith, whom I greatly respect, is trying to retrofit
- (retroorganize?) loose links into threads with TreeSaver, a noble effort, but
- too far from the source. The discussions need to come to the attention of
- subscribers in a time-sorted, more-timely-than-weekly-archives,
- hierarchical-by-subject, easily-branched, quickly-discarded and
- eminently-navigable medium. (Excuse me, I was suddenly possesed by Bucky
- Fuller.) Instead we get a pile of scraps on our (virtual) desktop.
-
- It's a crime that Apple, maker of this fine computer, tolerates and promotes an
- obsolete communications model for these discussions. As long as our model is
- the post office, we'll end up with junk mail, no matter how we reorganize the
- discussion groups.
-
- Make the changes, It'll help a for a little while, but most of us will still
- get all this mail because we'll join every group. Furthermore, new users will
- flood (aren't we expecting a flood of new MacApp users?) all the group
- address's with questions because they're not sure of where to go.
-
- Sorry, I was supposed to make a suggestion, not rant and rave.
- AppleLink desperately needs another flavor of message system:
- Public to all A'link subscribers.
- Full text searchable.
- Topic thread oriented.
- New threads easily launched, split, merged etc.
- Thread navigation as direct as a word processor w/ good outline control.
- Cross referenceable by users after posting, e.g. any browser can put in
- a hypertext link when seen. (god i used THE WORD, forgive me.)
- Auto-placemarks in threads for each user, combined w/compressed
- downloads of new material for particular threads.
- Hooks to the existing mail system, e.g. forward a thread to an associate
- without bringing it up and down the wire.
-
- With the exception of mouse navigation, BBS systems with these features
- can be had as shareware. The national nets, GEnie, C'serve, America Online
- (Hi, my name is Chris... :) etc. all provide some flavor of this service.
- Surely someone can shoehorn it into A'link.
-
- I've checked & I remain,
